Tips for Portrait Sessions

  • Avoid making major changes to your hair or any type of facial peel close to your photo session date.
  • Wear clothes that make you feel comfortable and confident.
  • Solid colors are best because they do not draw attention away from the face. However, a very subtle pattern is fine and does add variety. Loud patterns and stripes are not recommended.
  • Long sleeves and long pants are better than sleeveless or shorts. Large amounts of exposed skin draws attention away from the face.
  • Dress in simple, soft fabrics that follow the body’s natural contours.
  • Some poses will show your shoes so don’t forget to bring shoes and socks for each outfit that you plan to wear.
  • Avoid wearing any clothing with words printed on the front or have logos.
  • If this is a family or group sitting, avoid wearing the same outfit. You can be in the same color scheme if you would like, or have colors that complement each other but let everyone be an individual.
  • If you’re doing engagements or senior shots, bring a good mix of clothing from casual to formal.
  • Dark clothing tends to slenderize and helps to blend the bodies with the background, so that the faces are the most important part of the photograph. Light colors seem to add weight to the bodies.
  • Avoid white; it can make you look larger, and it’s a very reflective color and hard to photograph.
  • Avoid silk, satin, and highly reflective clothing. The sun is likely going to reflect every curve of your body in this type of material, and possibly NOT in the most flattering way.

One final point, remember...fingernails show so make sure nail polish is not chipped!
